Erica Tobe, Scott Matteson, Brenda Long, Carol Janney - Individuals who struggle with mental illness are an economically vulnerable population. Poor mental health has been shown to correlate with poverty and lack of financial empowerment (Lazar, Black, McMahon, O’Shea, & Rosen, 2014). To confirm, five qualitative focus group discussions were held with patients, family members, mental health care providers, and community leaders (Fall 2016). Findings revealed concerns related to insurance, access to education, transportation, competing stressors, and financial barriers. Implications exist for professionals to better understand the needs of patients and the ways that practitioners can provide support and education. As one patient succinctly stated, he/she needed personal financial education/coaching that addressed ‘how to be able to budget my money and still pay my bills and still be able to eat.’
