Guopeng Cheng, Rui Yao - Research has explored the role of student loan in the decreasing trend of homeownership in the past decade. The role of student loan in the accumulation of home equity, however, has not been widely examined. This study investigates the association between student loan and homeownership and home equity. Since homeownership can be a choice, this study adopts the Heckman’s model to address the potential sample selection bias in the analysis of home equity. Findings show that student loan not only reduced the likelihood of homeownership but also played a negative role in home equity accumulation. Results will help students who want to become homeowners in the future to make a more informed decision regarding student loan debt assumption and homeownership.
